Is Your Child Ready for Voice Lessons? Here's How to Know

Every parent has heard it — their child singing in the car, in the shower, or at the top of their lungs in the living room. And at some point, the question comes up: is it time for voice lessons? The answer might be sooner than you think.

Signs Your Child Is Ready

You don't need to wait until your child is a teenager to start voice lessons. In fact, many of the best habits — breath support, pitch awareness, confidence — are easiest to build when kids are young. Here are a few signs your child might be ready.

They love to sing. This sounds obvious, but genuine enthusiasm is the most important ingredient. If your child sings constantly and lights up when music comes on, they're already motivated.

They're curious about how their voice works. Kids who ask questions like "Why does my voice crack?" or "How do singers hold notes so long?" are showing natural curiosity that translates beautifully into lessons.

They want to perform. Whether it's a school talent show, a church solo, or just singing for grandma — a desire to share their voice is a great sign.

They're at least 6–7 years old. Younger children can absolutely enjoy music, but around age 6 or 7 most kids have the focus and breath control to benefit from structured voice lessons.

What About Teens and Adults?

Voice lessons aren't just for kids. Teens who are discovering their changing voices benefit enormously from working with a skilled teacher — it's a critical time to build healthy technique. And adults? It's never too late. Many of the most rewarding student journeys start with an adult who always wanted to sing but never had the chance. At Highnotes Music, we work with students of all ages — from young beginners to adults chasing a lifelong dream.

What Happens in a First Lesson?

A first voice lesson at Highnotes Music isn't an audition — it's a conversation. Tracey Lee McKenna, MM takes time to understand your child's personality, goals, and current level. There's no pressure, no judgment, and no "you have to sound perfect." The goal is simply to make your child feel comfortable and excited about their voice. You'll leave with a clear sense of where your child is, what they're working toward, and how lessons will help them get there.

In-Person or Online — Both Work

Highnotes Music offers lessons both in-person at our Ada, Michigan studio and online for students anywhere in the world. Online lessons are just as effective — Tracey has worked with students across the country and internationally, and the results speak for themselves.
